The
Legend of Zelda -
The Wind Waker
Release Date: March 24, 2003
Platform: GameCube
Review: If it wasn't for the short time
in Hyrule, I would say that this game was a complete waste of
$50. Everything that was ever cool about Zelda was ruined
in this game. To start off, it's the easiest game I have
ever played (I wonder if there is a Game Over screen?). On about
90% of the "puzzles" you never even have to think
twice (or once for that matter). And with certain items like the
Hook Shot and Grappling Hook, it puts a star on an object
if it can be used on it. And the story is completely nonobjective
and never gets put together.
Now graphics; I know there
has been a lot of arguments about the cel shading. Now at first
I was disappointed as well, but when the entire game is
that lame, it didn't even bother me anymore. I remember
when the Space World videos were released showing the awesome
battle with Ganondorf and Link; that is what we were
all looking forward to, but no, we got this instead. There were
some pretty cool effects however, like the warbling
smoke about fire, and the effects of fire and water were put across
very good (the rumble seemed to feel like water).
If there is one good thing
I can say about this game, I guess it would be in music. The music
is pretty good, especially in Hyrule. Hyrule was a very
awesome looking place, and when I go there I was hoping the
the game would stay that good, but it only got worse than before.
There are many sub quests
you can do, but the thing is, that your not forced to do them.
A little liberty is fine, but I think that was over doing
it. A lot of things can annoying and tedious as well. For example,
sometimes I would just try to sail against the wind instead
of changing the direction, because playing the song takes
a long time and gets very old after awhile.
I normally try not to complain
too much about a game, but this is the biggest disappointment
ever. Lately, Nintendo games just seem to be going down
hill, I just hate to see such a good series go down the
drain. I know I'm getting side-tracked but, just thinking back
to the old days when games where so cool, and you could
read about all the news ways they did stuff in Nintendo Power;
like around the time of Donkey Kong Country 2 and Killer
Instinct (or course that was all Rare but now they've joined with
Mircosoft, so I guess that's the end of them too). Well
all I have to say is that Nintendo better wake up before
the even think about planning the next Zelda game.
